This Sculpture celebrates the remarkable story and achievement of bringing home the 2014 Ryder Cup to Gleneagles Scotland. The artwork recognises the historic 1921 match at Gleneagles that inspired the Ryder Cup, and it’s homecoming 93 years later in 2014. The bronze sculpture is sited on the approach to the Dormy Clubhouse and the Gleneagles Hotel, facing the 18th hole of the King’s course, where the historic 1921 match was held.
A local glacial stone marks the beginning of the story, representing the first ever international golf match, and is encircled in bronze with the names of the 1921 American and British teams. The textured bronze ripples that emanate from this stone, culminate in a true representation of the landform of ‘Dun Roanin’ - the Ryder Cup 18th hole, cast from a 3D print of a digital scan of the hole and picked out in the low-relief bronze. Set around this tactile bronze are the names of the 2014 European and American teams.
Spiralling between these two events are 40 cast glass discs, inscribed with the date and location of each Ryder Cup match played before it’s homecoming to Gleneagles 93 years later.
The open structure of the sculpture plays beautifully with the ever-changing light as the viewer looks through the artwork to the 18th hole, where the original 1921 match was held and further afield to the Glendevon hills.
